PROGRAM MUSIC

  • It appeared because of the search for free. 

  • It was based on the description of a program or literary plot. 

  • Program music based its description on the association of ideas an musical timbres with particular characters, emotions, actions..., which allowed listeners to follow the narration. Berlioz called 'fixed idea' and Liszt and Wagner 'leitmotif'.

  • There are two main forms: program symphony and symphonic poem.

   -P.S:  it is a compound instrumental form divided into several movements. 

It was created by H.Berlioz (1803/1869) with his work 'Fantastic Symphony'. 

  - S.P: it is an orchestral composition in one movement. It was creates by F.Liszt with his piecce 'Les Preludes', based on 'The Poetical Meditations' by Lamartine.
